This page provides details of any abbreviations and terms used in this site. The reason that I have done this is because it is a good idea in terms of accessibility and use-ability. It is easy to assume that everybody understands the language that is being used but many technical terms and abbreviations are not in general useage. I have however assumed that most internet user will be familiar with terms such as web page and web browser.
This abbreviation stands for (the) British Broadcasting Corporation. This is a publicly funded producer of television & radio programmes, though it also performs many other functions such as learning, revision help which support it's programmes and the community. For more information please visit the BBC's website.
This is an abbreviation for Cascading Style Sheets. These are commonly used in websites to apply styles such as font colors and font sizes to a websites. The main advantage that they have is that they can be used to apply generic styles to whole sites allowing easy changes to be made. Importantly they allow the stylying of the page to be separated.
Dynamic HTML A collective term for a combination of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) tags and options, style sheets, and programming that will let you create Web pages more animated and more responsive to user interaction than previous versions of HTML. Dynamic HTML can allow Web documents to look and act like desktop applications or multimedia productions.
This abbreviation stands for Hypertext Markup Language or Extensible Hypertext Markup Language which does not really explain thing very well so try the following quote.
(Hypertext Markup Language) The coding language used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web.
I doubt if that really clears things up for you so we'll try another one
Hypertext Markup Language is the basic language used to write web pages. HTML is a mark up language and not a full-blown programming language so is therefore essentially static in nature. HTML is parsed by your web browser when a web page downloads and consists of tags (commands to tell the browser how to render the text, where to load in graphics etc on the web page) as well as the actual text.
I guess that the last one is a bit better basically html is used to make webpages that are viewed in web browsers. It is not a programming language in any sense of the word.
This is a scripting language developed by Netscape to enhance websites interactivity, for example it was widely used for creating image rollovers. It can interact with HTML source code to dynamically change pages or validate forms. The main problem with Javascript is that users can turn it off in their browser and also it has some accessibility issues, though I think if its used wisely it can make a good addition to a website as long as the site can be used without javascript. This site uses some Javascript to make column height equal.
Hypertext Preprocessor is an open source server side programming language generally used for web scripts and to process web data such as forms. PHP can be written as scripts that reside on the server and may produce HTML output that downloads to the web browser. Alternatively, PHP can be embedded within HTML pages that are then saved with a .php file as this site has been. PHP is quite powerful and as its server based has advantages over other languages such as Javascript
This really means using html in its correct defined way. This involves using divs for layout rather than tables (which are only used to display tabular data) and using
p
tags for text and
h1
tags for headings in order of priority. The main advantage of this is that the HTML is used in the way it was intented for and can be used in a cross platform way and is much more accessible.
Extensible Markup Language is a W3C initiative that allows information and services to be encoded with meaningful structure and semantics that computers and humans can understand. XML is great for information exchange, and can easily be extended to include user-specified and industry-specified tags.
